In December 14th 2006, WU of Ho Chi Minh City, in coordination with the Resources and Environment Dept., organized final round of the contest “Women and Environment” with the participation of 10 groups which have been short-listed (10 persons per each). These groups are from Clubs of women joining to environmental protection of the districts 4, 5, 9, 12, Phu Nhuan, Tan Binh, Tan Phu and Hoc Mon.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Khanh Tam, in her opening speech emphasized that for many years, WU of the City has promoted communication activities to change women’s bahavior towards the issue of clean water and environmental sanitation, such as: coordinating with the Resources and Environment Dept. opening several sites for at place gabarge classification in districts 6 & 10; supporting fund to build sanitary latrines, biogas cellars; setting up Clubs of women joining to protect the environment, whose members will be motivators coming to every family. Especially, in 2006, Ho Chi Minh City WU organized 24 training courses for 1,200 key motivators, providing them with communication knowledge and skills to help people understand on clean water and environmental sanitation.

This contest is served to evaluate the effectiveness of communication activities and the quality of local motivators. At the same time, it is a good opportunity to raise awareness for the local WU’s staff and members on environmental protection, to change their behaviors and habits in order to have reasonable use of natural ressources, for a civilized lifestyle and sustainable development.

After 3 parts: knowledge on clean water and environmental sanitation; the game “women with at place gabarge classification” and small play, the 1^st prize has been given to WU of Tan Binh district, the 2^nd prize went to district 4 and the 3^rd prize to 2 districts: Phu Nhuan and district 12
