Joining hands to prevent and combat human trafficking: “Victims’ Voices Lead the Way”

Ms. Ha Thi Nga, Member of the Party Central Committee (PCC), VWU President and Lieutenant General Nguyen Duy Ngoc, PCC Member, Deputy Minister of Public Security co-chaired the conference. Attending this event were Ms. Bui Thi Hoa, VWU Vice President, Ms. Park Mi Hyung, Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Vietnam, among other delegates.

In the opening remarks, VWU President Ha Thi Nga emphasized that over the past time, the Party, State, ministries and branches at all levels have focused on leading, directing and implementing policies, laws and international commitments on human trafficking prevention with remarkable results. However, the situation of human trafficking is still complicated with new and more sophisticated tricks while victims are vulnerable people, mostly women and children.

She stated that the theme “Victims’ Voices Lead the Way” recommends to countries to focus on victim-centered solutions in human trafficking prevention and control. This is also Vietnam’s principle and approach affirmed in the Law on Prevention and Control of Human Trafficking, Ms. Nga added.

She also called on WUs at all levels to boost communication on anti-human trafficking as well as coordinate with police forces and relevant agencies to fight the crime and assist victims in a timely and effective manner, especially promoting the “Peace House”, “Kindness House” models to effectively support female victims for their reintegration into the community.

Speaking at the event, Lieutenant General Nguyen Duy Ngoc assessed that in recent years, human trafficking crimes have been increasingly complicated in tricks and methods. The traffickers colluded to form organizations, closed lines, operated in many areas and across countries, took advantage of social network (facebook, zalo...) to trick, coerce and deceive women and children into being trafficked abroad or domestically. Most of the victims are economically difficult, unemployed, lack of social knowledge and life skills.

In response to the increasingly complicated development of human trafficking in the coming time, Mr. Ngoc called on ministries and sectors to effectively implement key tasks and solutions mentioned in the national program on prevention and control of human trafficking from 2021 to 2025 with a vision to 2030. He also stressed that law enforcement agencies at the central level should take systemic measures to investigate and strictly handle human trafficking crimes while expanding cooperation with judicial agencies of other countries to attack human trafficking rings and rescue victims.

At the end of event, leaders of the VWU, MPS and representatives of the Border Guard, IOM Vietnam jointly made commitments to human trafficking prevention and combat.
