Opportunities opened up for women in digital transformation amid Covid-19 pandemic

The seminar "Supporting women in digital transformation amid the Covid-19 pandemic towards sustainable development" has opened up orientations and opportunities for domestic and international agencies and organizations to join hands with women in the digital transformation process, contributing to gender equality and sustainable development of the country.

On the occasion of the VWU’s 91st anniversary and the Vietnamese Women's Day October 20th, the Vietnam Women's Union in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs holds a seminar on "Supporting women in digital transformation amid the Covid-19 pandemic towards sustainable development” with the aim to create a forum for information exchange and sharing of initiatives to strengthen women's capacity for international integration and digital transformation.

The seminar is held offline and online with the participation of more than 240 delegates from Embassies, United Nations agencies, international organizations in Vietnam, ministries and governmental agencies, the Fatherland Front, mass organizations, businesses, social organizations, Women's Unions, Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of Information and Communication in 63 provinces and cities nationwide. The seminar is supported by the Hanns Seidel Foundation (Germany) through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In the Covid-19 pandemic, digital transformation is not only a solution to promote development but also an ever more urgent requirement for countries as well as individuals. 

Over the past time, the VWU has activities to support women in digital transformation and international integration such as increasing the use of online platforms in communication, training for members and women; providing training on information technology application in production and business, connecting women with e-commerce platforms for selling their products, etc.

Speaking at the seminar, Member of the Party Central Committee, VWU President Ha Thi Nga said: "Supporting women in international integration and digital transformation will also be one of the important directions to be discussed and approved at the XIII National Women's Congress, scheduled in March 2022. With that direction, the implementation will be carried out by women’s unions at all levels to create a breakthrough contributing to the development of women and the country's sustainable development goals".

Mr. Nguyen Minh Vu, Alternate Member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, says that, first of all, it is necessary to assess the opportunities, challenges, and major problems that the digital transformation process has been affecting women and girls. On that basis, solutions and recommendations will be made to improve women's capacity and skills for international integration and digital transformation and to ensure women's access to the digital transformation process so that "no women are left behind". Next, strengthening public-private cooperation to mobilize all resources to support the Vietnamese women in the digital transformation process.

At the seminar, diplomats, entrepreneurs, local authority officials, community development activists, WU officials, etc. contribute ideas and propose specific and practical solutions to supporting women in digital transformation and international integration, especially in the context of the "new normal" - active and safe living with Covid-19.

Mr. Michael Siegner, Representative of the Hanns Seidel Foundation in Vietnam, says that the digital transformation and the overcoming of the Covid-19 pandemic – are also challenges that will not be successfully tackled if women are kept at the sidelines.

At the Seminar, representatives of international organizations and information technology corporations shared about empowering women through digital transformation and the role of businesses in supporting women in digital transformation. Also a panel discussion with the topic "Supporting women in digital transformation amid the COVID-19 pandemic towards sustainable developments" was held with the participation of a number of female Ambassadors, the Chief Representative of the United Nations agency, Hanoi Women's Union and a representative of a community development project. The speakers exchanged ideas, experiences, initiatives, and propose solutions to support women in digital transformation and international integration, especially of the “new normal” situation - active and safe living with COVID-19.

The ideas shared at the Seminar show the importance and great interest of digital transformation and supporting women to participate in and benefit from this process. Digital transformation is the key to creating a breakthrough in the country's socio-economic development, improving gender equality and effectively dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. The seminar is one of the initiatives affirming the determination of the WU at all levels to bring the policy of integration and digital transformation into the VWU’s key performance program for the term 2022 – 2027.
