Taiwan gives helping hand to Vietnamese brides

07/10/2005
Taiwan has invested some US$300 million to help Vietnamese women who have tied the knot with Taiwanese nationals integrate into the local community, according to a workshop in Hanoi Aug 16.

The money has gone to programs which teach Chinese to Vietnamese women and help them seek employment, said a Taiwanese university professor at the workshop held by a Taipei Office in Hanoi.

Also, there is a hotline in Taiwan for Vietnamese wives to report domestic violence. Some five percent of Taiwanese-Vietnamese marriages have ended in divorce due to the problem. Taiwan has also launched a Vietnamese-language radio channel, said the professor.

Statistics show that 80,000 Vietnamese brides make their home in Taiwan. Most are from Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region and have little education, while their Taiwanese husbands are from poor families in rural areas
