Vietnam secures two more Olympic slots in boxing and judo

06/07/2021
The number of Vietnam’s slots in the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics has been raised to 18, with boxer Nguyen Thi Tam and judo fighter Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy being the country’s latest Olympians.
Nguyen Thi Tam (L) is the second Vietnamese boxer eligible for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics

Tam sealed her Olympic place in the Women’s Flyweight (48-51kg) event after accumulating 190 points from international tournaments.

In addition, her ticket is partly thanks to the fact that world No. 1 Park Mi Choi of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) will be absent following her country’s decision to withdraw from the summer Games.

Tam, reigning national and SEA Games champion, is the second 2020 Olympian for Vietnamese boxing, following Nguyen Van Duong in the Men’s Featherweight (52-57kg) category.

As recently announced by the International Judo Federation, Vietnamese fighter Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy qualified for the Tokyo Games in the Women’s 52kg event, as one of Asia’s top 10.

Thuy, ranked 11th in the continent, was promoted to replace 10th-ranked Yu Sun Jon (DPRK) who had withdrawn.

Both tam and Thuy are in the process of completing COVID-19 vaccination and preparing necessary procedures for the Tokyo trip.

With these two additions, Vietnam has booked a total of 18 places in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, thanks to Truong Thi Kim Tuyen (taekwondo); Nguyen Huy Hoang, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien (swimming); Le Thanh Tung, Dinh Phuong Thanh (gymnastics); Nguyen Van Duong, Nguyen Thi Tam (boxing); Nguyen Tien Minh, Nguyen Thuy Linh (badminton); Do Thi Anh Nguyet, Nguyen Hoang Phi Vu (archery); Luong Thi Thao / Dinh Thi Hao (rowing); Thach Kim Tuan, Vuong Thi Huyen, Hoang Thi Duyen (weightlifting); Quach Thi Lan (athletics); Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting); and Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy (judo).

Deputy Director of the General Department of Sports and Physical Training Tran Duc Phan has been appointed to head the Vietnamese delegation to the 2020 Games. As scheduled, the national contingent will depart for Tokyo on July 18 with its nearly 40 members.
