Opera singer Thang Long has been invited to perform in W.A. Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’ at Norrlands Opera Theatre in Umea, Sweden.

The sopranist from Vietnam Opera and Ballet Theatre (VNOB) is one of the six soloists, acting as Papagena in the play.

Another opera singer from VNOB Huyen Nga has also been invited to sing in the chorus. The opera has the participation of 22 singers and two children, including two from South Africa.

According to VNOB’s deputy director Pham Hong Hai, Thang Long has been invited after her successful role as Fiodiligi in “Cosi Fan Tuttle – The School of Love”, also by Mozart which was performed in Sweden in late 2006.

Hong Hai also said that the first show of “Magic Flute” in Norrlands Opera Theatre in September 20 saw a big crowd of audiences. 1,600 tickets had been sold out from the beginning of the year with the price of Kr 300 – 350 each, approximately VND 1 million.

In the opera, the chorus singers and sopranists sing in Swedish but in dialogues, Thang Long performed in Vietnamese and South African artists used their native language (with Swedish subtitles). That is a new experiment of Norrlands Opera Theatre.

Magic Flute will be performed in 21 nights including 14 in Umea and seven in other big cities in Sweden.

Magic Flute, the last play by Mozart, was also staged for the first time by the Vietnamese artists in September, 2006.
