VWU Vice President Nguyen Thi Minh Huong delivers opening remarks

According to the national report on environmental status (2019) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the total volume of solid waste in urban areas accounts for 55% of the volume of domestic solid waste nationwide. This is a consequence of population growth, plus rapid industrialization and urbanization.

Besides, 85% of the garbage in Vietnam is currently being treated mainly with landfill technology; It is wasteful, requires lot of land fund, and seriously pollutes the land, water, and air environment at the same time, especially in big cities. Most landfills contain household solid waste that has not been classified, of which organic waste accounts for a large amount. Household waste has been directly affecting the quality of life, people's health and the country's economic growth. Although various measures have been implemented, the problem of waste collection and treatment has not been completely resolved.
