Hanoi Women’s Union holds 13th Congress
The 13th Congress of the Hanoi Women’s Union opened on October 16, with the participation of Vice State President Truong My Hoa and nearly 440 delegates.
The congress aims to bring into full play the tradition of elegance, solidarity, renewal and development in the lead up to the 1000th anniversary of Thang Long-Hanoi.
Speaking on this occasion, Chairwoman of the Hanoi Women’s Union To Yen Khanh said over the past five years, the union has encouraged municipal women to overcome difficulties and challenges, to make the best of advantages and new opportunities and to boost emulation movements for successfully implementation of the resolutions adopted at the Union’s 12th Congress.
Annually, the union encourages between 85-90 percent of its members and 80 percent of municipal women to take part in the movement “All people are united to build a new cultural life”. Around 15,000 women are provided with vocational training and employment consultancy per year and up to 90 percent of union members’ households are conferred “Civilised and happy family” title. So far, the union has helped nearly 2,900 member households escape from poverty and 164 women drug users kick the habit.
Ms Khanh emphasized that in the next term (2006-2011), the union should intensify propaganda activities to raise public awareness of gender equality and condemn acts of encroachment on women’s dignity, women and child trafficking and family violence.
At the congress, Vice State President Truong My Hoa presented the Independence Order, (first class) to the Hanoi Women’s Union.
