Help stop trade in women and children, Vietnam labor unions told
Do Duc Ngo, vice chairman of the Vietnam Labor Confederation, the overarching labor association, said employment would prevent women from being trafficked. He also called on them to help raise public awareness of trafficking and to join the national program to prevent trade in women and children.
Figures released at the seminar, held by the confederation and the UN’s International Labor Organization, showed that more than 3,800 Vietnamese women and children have been sold abroad, mostly to brothels or as brides and servants.
Colonel Nguyen Manh Te, deputy head of the Crime Investigation Department, said last year there had been 209 trafficking cases involving the sale of 499 women and children abroad.
Trafficking happened mainly along the border with China and Cambodia, he said.
