Organization of Angolan Women and Vietnam Women’s Union share experiences in supporting its members to develop comprehensively

Within the framework of the working visit to Vietnam, on August 21st Ms. Maria Augusta Leonel Correia, Member of the MPLA Party Central Committee, Secretary of the International Relations of Organization of Angolan Women (OMA) had a meeting with Ms. Tran Lan Phuong, Vice President of Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) to share experiences in supporting its members and promoting women’s development.

Ms. Maria shared that the OMA is the largest social organization in Angola with important political and social tasks and responsibilities, actively participating in the ruling Party’s activities. In the field of women’s political participation, Angola has one female President of the National Assembly and one female Vice President of MPLA Party. Besides, the OMA promotes women’s empowerment through training and fostering activities in response to domestic violence, health care programs for women and improving their life quality. In the area of economic development, they also support to improve production conditions for women, encouraging them to participate in the cooperatives, and facilitating women’s access to loans guaranteed by the OMA.

Welcoming the delegation to VWU head office, Ms. Tran Lan Phuong agreed with Ms. Maria that the women’s unions play an important role in attracting, gathering and engaging women to contribute to the country’s development. She also introduced to the delegation about the VWU’s functions, tasks and its key missions.

Ms. Lan Phuong added that the VWU pays much attention to empower women in various fields. In terms of women’s political participation, the proportion of female National Assembly delegates is relatively high (30.26%). Regarding supporting women in economic development, the movement to excel in business is vibrant with the percentage of women entrepreneurs reaching 28.2% (the highest in Southeast Asia), and the participation rate of women in the workforce is steadily increasing.

The OMA and the VWU also shared experiences in member gathering activities, and hope that two organizations will have more discussions, exchanges, and development cooperation, including delegation exchanges and meetings at higher levels in the near future, aiming to strengthen the relationship between the two unions.
