Project 8: Striving to establish and maintain nearly 1,400 community communication groups by 2024

February 28, 2024: The Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) held a meeting of the Steering Committee of Project 8 "Realizing gender equality and addressing urgent problems for women and children" under the National Target Program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the 2021-2030 period.

The VWU’s President Ha Thi Nga, Head of the Project Steering Committee chaired the meeting. The meeting aimed to review the progress and results of implementing the tasks and targets of Project 8 by 2023, and deploy key tasks for 2024.

Overview of the meeting

At the meeting, the VWU’s Vice President Nguyen Thi Thu Hien updated the Project 8’s implementation progress until 2023 and outlined the key tasks for 2024.

According to Ms. Hien, in recent times, the VWU at all levels has made efforts to implement and achieve positive results as proposed by the Project in Phase 1 (2021-2025). Particularly, two outstanding provinces namely Ha Giang and Lao Cai have basically achieved  the phase 1’s targets. Most project provinces and cities are striving to achieve 100% of the Project's basic targets in Phase 1 by 2024. At the same time, they focus on maintaining and improving the efficiency and quality of the Project’s models.

To better implement Project 8, the VWU’s Vice President Nguyen Thi Thu Hien stated that the Project 8’s Steering Committee has set out a number of targets for Phase 1 to be achieved in 2024. Specifically, in 2024, it is expected to establish and maintain 1,377 community communication groups; support 316 livelihood groups, cooperative groups and cooperatives owned or co-owned by women to apply science and technology; establish 668 Champions of Change Clubs; enhance the capacity of at least 1,000 female ethnic minority officials to hold leadership positions in the political system etc.

According to the report, by the end of 2023, the VWU at all levels had established and maintained 7,623 out of 9,000 community communication groups (achieving 84.7% of the Phase 1’s target); 84 out of 500 livelihood groups, cooperative groups and cooperatives were established (reaching 36.8% of the Phase 1’s target) with 2,208 women as owners or managers; 1,462 out of 1,000 trusted addresses had been built and strengthened (exceeding the Phase 1’s target); 1,132 out of 1,800 Champions of Change Clubs were established and maintained (achieving 62.9% of the Phase 1’s target); 233 out of 600 training courses on gender equality monitoring and evaluation for 12,478 officials at all levels were organized (achieving 38.8% of the Phase 1’s target); 10/10 provinces with a higher than the national average home birth rate of ethnic minority women have allocated funds to support and promote activities related to the 4 main support packages for ethnic minority women for safe childbirth and childcare.

 

On October 14, 2021, the Government of Viet Nam officially approved Project 8 “Realizing gender equality and addressing urgent problems for women and children”. This is is one of 10 major projects under the National Target Program for socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas in the 2021-2030 period.
