Striving to make Viet Nam role model for regional gender equality

Hanoi, Viet Nam, June 11, 2024. “UN Women Viet Nam seeks comprehensive partnership with the Vietnam Women's Union (VWU) and making Viet Nam a role model for regional gender equality”, Ms. Caroline T. Nyamayemombe, Representative of UN Women Viet Nam shared in a working session with VWU President Ha Thi Nga.

At the meeting, VWU President, Ha Thi Nga highly appreciated UN Women's effective support for Viet Nam, including the VWU in ending violence against women, enhancing women's economic empowerment, reducing natural disaster risks, adapting to climate change and joint policy advocacy. Ms. Nga also detailed the VWU's recent activities in giving social feedback and criticism on legal documents, particularly making inputs from gender perspectives for such draft laws as the draft Law on Juvenile Justice, Law on Human trafficking prevention and combat (amended), the Government's report on the implementation of the gender equality targets in 2023... A number of the VWU’s opinions have been accepted and included by the drafting agency.

Concerning the news that Viet Nam was recently elected to the Executive Board of UN Women for the 2025 - 2027 term, VWU President emphasized "the event once again affirms that UN Women Viet Nam has had effective support and coordination with Vietnamese agencies and organizations, including the VWU, thereby contributing to enhance Viet Nam's image and reputation internationally in terms of its efforts and achievements on gender equality".

UN Women Viet Nam Representative Caroline Nyamayemombe showed her good impressions on the VWU’s activities and Viet Nam's gender equality work recently. She praised Viet Nam's strides in gender equality, highlighting the approval of the National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (2024-2030) last January which is a big step forward, showing the Government’s commitment for gender equality in Viet Nam and opening space for further collaboration with the Vietnam Women's Union.

In response, Ms. Nga strongly agreed with the cooperation initiatives suggested by UN Women Viet Nam Representative and expressed her confidence that the two organizations would undertake practical activities to bring greater benefits and comprehensive development to women and children in Viet Nam in the coming time.
