Three thousand essential packages to migrant women distributed

28/01/2022
From January 16 to 23, 2022, the UN Women in Viet Nam in collaboration with the Vietnam Women’s Union delivered 3,000 gender sensitive essential packages, worth 3 billion VND (150,000 USD), to 3,000 women in Ho Chi Minh City, Thai Binh and Nghe An. These are migrant workers who are facing difficulties due to the COVID-19 pandemic and are also at high risk of gender-based violence.

The activity is under the Safe and Fair programme which is the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative, funded by the European Union, jointly implemented by the ILO and UN Women to end violence against women migrant workers in the ASEAN region. During the fourth wave of COVID-19, women were among the hardest hit groups, suffering from job losses, reduced working hours and incomes. Ho Chi Minh City, Thai Binh and Nghe An provinces were identified for this emergency support because Ho Chi Minh City is the hardest hit area while Thai Binh and Nghe An provinces are home to high numbers of women migrant workers who have been engaged in migration.

The provision of these gender sensitive essential packages to women migrant workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic would be critical to enhance their resilience and agency as well as reduce their vulnerability to gender-based violence.

According to Mr. Jesús Laviña, Deputy Head of Cooperation Section, EU Delegation to Viet Nam, the delivery of essential packages helps migrant women be ready to respond to violence, ensuring their dignity and safety.

Besides handover of essential packages, communication sessions about gender-based violence for the beneficiary women were also organized.

Communication on about gender-based violence for beneficiary women

According to the Vietnam Women’s Union the delivery of the packages together with the communication campaigns on gender-based violence would be helpful to raise the awareness and confidence and reduce the vulnerability of migrant women, thus contributing to improve the status of women in their families and the society.
