Well-behaved children lauded

28/08/2007
Speaking at a ceremony in honor of children who behave well toward their parents, President of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) Pham The Duyet applauded their good behavior, calling them model Vietnamese citizens.

Mr. Duyet also warned that ethical standards have tended to degenerate due to irresponsible parents, bad treatment at the hands of siblings, and fights over parents’ property.

At the gathering, stories of the model children moved audience members. For example, teacher Bui Quang Tuan of the Mekong Delta’s An Giang Province spent 18 years taking care of his sick mother; student Nguyen Dinh Loc cared for his mentally ill father while still maintaining his studies; and old Vu Dinh Dau of Ha Noi still looks after his parents.

All the people in the audience felt sympathy for the circumstances of Tran Thi Huong, who is over fifty years old and lives in District 12.

She walks 10 kilometers every day to a garden where she is hired to pick jasmine flowers or pull grass.

She earns VND15,000 a day to support her ninety-year-old mother and ill sister. She has refused offers of marriage to devote her life to her family.

This 4th meeting in praise of 196 children from across Viet Nam was held by Dai Doan Ket Newspaper yesterday in HCMC with the participation of State Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan and the HCMC People’s Committee Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thu Ha.
