08/01/2010
More than 1.9 million USD will be earmarked to carry out 43 gender equality activities under the 2010 Vietnam-UN joint action programme.

This was announced at a seminar jointly held by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs in Hanoi on Dec. 21.

UNFPA Chief Representative Bruce Campbell highlighted Vietnam ’s gender equality achievements, including an increase in the rate of female children having access to primary and junior secondary education and the highest number of women parliamentarians in the ASEAN region.

The rate of women enjoying compulsory medical insurance is the same as men, he added.

However, he pointed out existing problems in gender equality as women remain victims of domestic violence.

A survey conducted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) revealed that up to 21.2 percent of couples suffer from domestic violence.

The UNFPA chief representative took the occasion to call on people to jointly strive for a better life for both men and women.
