Phương breaks own pole vault record

Pole-vaulter Lê Thị Phương broke her own record in the women's pole-vault on the opening day of the National Athletics Championships at Hà Nội's Mỹ Đình Stadium on october 18.

Phương, from Thanh Hóa, cleared the bar at 4.1m, surpassing her old record by 0.05 m, which she set in the Thai Open Track and Field event at Thammasat Stadium, Bangkok early this year.

The national member also took home a gold medal in the event, which is viewed as good preparation for the upcoming 23rd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in the.Phillippines later this year.

Phương's team mate, Lê Thị Gái, also won a gold medal and new record in the women's 10km walking event, clocking in at 54 minutes 2.81 seconds and beating Nguyễn Thị Thanh Thảo of Đà Nẵng, who finished 24 seconds slower.

Trương Thị Diện of Thanh Hóa came in third at 54:5 1 .92.

In the men's 5,000m run , Nguyễn Văn Khoa of Hà Nội sprinted fỉrst and finished in 14:48.63 with the suppọrt of his team - mate, Nguyễn Chí Đông, who came in third wíth 15:l0.46.

The Hà Nội team worked together by having Đông trail closely be- hind Nguyễn Văn Toản of Hà Tây almost the entire race, exhausting him.

Toản finally clocked in at 15:10.03 and won the silver medal.

The championships, wich attract nealy 370 athletes, is the last test for national members befor competing in the 23rd SEA Games.

Last year, the Army team took the championships.
