Twelve elderly people honoured with folk artisan title

The Vietnam Folk Literature and Arts Association on January 11 honoured 12 elderly people with the ‘folk artisan’ title for their knowledge of folk songs and epic poems and performances of traditional music instruments.

The total number of elderly people who have received the "folk artisan" title so far totals 48.

The association also issued annual awards to 53 research projects o­n folk culture, customs, traditional craft villages and gastronomy.

Two of the research projects receiving awards were o­n the topics of folk culture in southern Bac Lieu province and Vietnamese proverbs.

Speaking at the award ceremony o­n January 11, Prof. To Ngoc Thanh, who is also President of the association, praised the works that collect Vietnamese cultural heritage. They included irrigation experiences of northwestern ethnic minorities and the central highlands' gong culture, which are highly valued by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), he noted.
