“Sleepless Souls” – A Play about Martyrs Dang Thuy Tram and Nguyen Van Thac.

18/05/2006
After much consideration and thought, director Doan Hoang Giang has made a play about Dang Thuy Tram, Nguyen Van Thac and other martyrs.

Whenever being called these days, you say that you are “on stage”. Does the play about Dang Thuy Tram bring to you so much strenuousness?

Frankly saying, I have been haunted by Thuy Tram for a long time, since I read extracts from her diary. This diary has a very beautiful itinerary and a strange fate, acting as the subconscious bridge that stirs a whole generation. Moreover, Dang Thuy Tram herself is strange, a Hanoian women in Duc Pho, a region that is full of weapons and bombs. She is different from other images of other heroines in Nghe An, Ha Tinh long ago. I am working day and night on this, even taking advantage at lunchtime to discuss it further with actors and think of ways to further streamline the play. I consider it a real challenge.

What do you do to preserve Doan Hoang Giang “brand name” against those challenges?

I want to say that the image of Dang Thuy Tram is more important than Doan Hoang Giang “brand name”. I had a brand name long ago, thus I don’t need to talk more about it.

So many people are interested in the image of Dang Thuy Tram. For this reason, I will hurt them when not doing well. My method is to build up a meeting and dialogue between the youth of nowadays and Dang Thuy Tram, Nguyen Van Thac, Vu Xuan and Le Cao Dai of former time, with the witness of American soldiers.

The stage is divided into three steps/layers, a woeful and majestic past, a present with many burning issues and dreams about a brighter future.

There will be many songs in the play. I am sorry that I have to omit cinema effects due to a limited budget but will use many other methods.

With so many methods, in your opinion, how great is the vogue it has?

Sure. I have many reasons. The first is that Dang Thuy Tram is being paid so much attention. The second is that people are curious about how the Army Theatre Company works. And the third is that Doan Hoang Giang’s work is interesting! In the opening scene, 60 martyrs, along with the youth of nowadays march with stamping noises on the stage… surely viewers will be fevered!
