Mourning for Nightingale of Cai Luong

Cai Luong (southern folk opera) Diva, Mrs. Nam Can Tho, passed away on January 24th in Ho Chi Minh City. She was 91 years old.

Mrs. Tho, a contemporary of other famous artists of her time like Phung Ha, Mrs. Nam Sa Dec, Mrs. Ba Ben Tre and others, was born Truong Thi Trac in 1916 in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho. She was well known for her renditions of Cai Luong songs and for her roles in plays such as The Nightingale and Princess Thoai Ba.


In her prime, the broad-minded actress was often referred to as “the Queen of Cai Luong”. She devoted her entire life to the stage and did much to promote the art form and act as a mentor for promising young talent.


Her funeral was held at the Ho Chi Minh City Rest-Home of Artists in District 8.
